A MOBILIZED NEIGHBORHOOD: The Delmas 60 assembly is not only cleaning streets. They are planning to launch an adult literacy program later this year.

INSPIRING ACTIONS: The street cleaning efforts in Delmas 60 have inspired other neighborhood assemblies to do the same.

Konbit Street Cleaning

In Haitian Creole, konbit refers to the communal work that farmers have done for centuries in Haiti and Africa, joining forces to harvest crops or build a road. Recently, the newly formed Neighborhood Assembly of Delmas 60, a poor neighborhood near Jakè, formed its own street-cleaning konbit. Every week, two-dozen people from the neighborhood rise at dawn and work throughout the day, removing trash and dirt from the streets while educating residents about keeping the area clean. Members of AVJ have helped out, and inspired by this example, have formed their own street-cleaning konbit in Jakè.
